Power is the whole game
Newer ASICs win on efficiency (J/TH): at a fixed power rate, a 17 J/TH machine leaves a much bigger margin than a 30 J/TH one. Most hosting contracts bill per kWh with a minimum consumption, so an idle machine still costs money. Before signing, check the uptime SLA and what happens when the rig becomes unprofitable - the honest hosts let you power it down.
